1) Cement is a mixture of carbonous (containing carbon), silicious (... silicon), and ferrous (iron) aggregate, chemically bonded through hydration. Various properties such as heat of hydration and resistance to chemical (usually sulfate) wear can be controlled through the proportions of these components of the mixture. A higher heat of hydration will develop the cement's strength more quickly. Cement and concrete posess extremely high strengths of compression, but have very low capabilities to sustain tensile and shearing forces. This weakness can be compensated for by reenforcing blocks with steel under tension during the setting process.
2) Copper has a high resistance to corrosion and is arguably therefore the best material for plumbing systems. Oxidation, however, creates a green patina over time. Brass is an alloy of copper with zinc.
3) I had two job interviews Friday and then celebrated the final day of my former-colleague's four-year reign-of-terror at the cellular phone store. He bought himself a cake which said, "I Quit!"
4) I'm an anarchist. I don't believe in democracy, on the large scale. I don't generally concern myself with politics over which I have no significant control.
5) I'm agnostic. I attend Roman Catholic services in a foreign language once or twice per month.
6) Last weekend I went to New York. I saw two concerts, including performers Kaki King, Patty Larkin, Björk, Bang On a Can All-Stars, Ursula Oppens, Bruce Brubaker, and John Zorn. I was robbed for $200 and stayed with a friend in Brooklyn who immediately came down with strep throat... but I had a great time.
7) Without work, I'll go into debt around mid-December. I'm torn between expending effort on a job-for-pay and otherwise looking rather hopelessly for a career-oriented position I'm much less qualified for. [04/15/06: I did go into debt in December. Then I went to Puerto Rico and came back and continued making debts. I start a drafting job with a civil engineering firm on Monday.]
[152 days later...]
8) Yesterday was my birthday. I'm so lonely right now, Internet.
9) I typed 1-7 at the College Hill Branch of Westminster Public Library in Colorado.
10) The muppet hecklers are named Statler and Waldorf. Drummer Animal's character was inspired by Keith Moon of The Who.

take care, you crazy cat.
